Since June 1 2011 the department of Biochemistry officially offers viral load determination of Hepatitis B (HBV) and C (HCV) to the public. The internationally validated Roche protocol and Roche equipment is used, with which a minimum of 25 IU/ml can be detected. This Viral Load Determination measures HCV RNA values and can be used to monitor the virologic response to HCV therapy. Therefore, it can provide support to the decision to start with antiviral therapy, the influence on the dosage and duration of treatment and the identification of resistant strains.
