In addition to medical services, the Medical Research Institute also used its expertise in the field of DNA research for the Ministry of Justice and Police, to set up forensic DNA investigation in Suriname. On August 12, 2010 the cooperation between the Ministry of Justice and Police and the Medical Scientific Institute was formalized through the signing of an agreement. The required equipment was purchased with remaining sector fund resources of the Ministry and a partnership was started with the Dutch Forensic Institute (NFI). The forensic rooms are furnished, the protocols for the lab setting are ready and attention is paid to adjusting the lab process of reprocessing a trace to DNA profile, to forensic standards.
In 2012, the validation process was completed, wherein an unknown panel with spores in various dilutions and a different support material from blood, saliva, semen as well as mixing profiles, prepared by the NFI, was analyzed successfully. The formal launch of the forensic DNA laboratory was on December 17, 2012, in the presence of the entire judicial top. The introduction of a quality management system (ISO 17025) is carried out in collaboration with the NFI and with the US Embassy we are working to establish a DNA database in accordance with FBI standards.
