In October 2008 serotyping of the Dengue virus was set up at the Medical Scientific Institute. With this, insight can be gained in the population data on common subtypes.
Dengue serotyping was performed for the first time in Suriname during the epidemic in February – March 2009. When the Ministry of Health requested clarification on the then circulating dengue serotypes in Paramaribo, the Medical Scientific Institute determined that both type DEN-1 and type DEN-3 were circulating in Suriname during this period.
